SPEECH FOR DR B R SHETTY- Indian Workers

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I extend my warm greetings to all of you.

It is a pleasure to be here at this function to honour the tireless efforts of construction workers of Indian origin.

While high-profile Indians, successful businessmen, and professionals have been recognized in the past but it is the first time that the Indian Embassy at Abu Dhabi is taking measures to recognize the sincerity and dedication of workers of low-income group. This will be the first in the series of programmes to be arranged to recognize their contributions.

The memento and the commendation certificate is a small way to show our gratitude for the years of hard work that you have put in to shape the future of the UAE and India. It is a small token of our appreciation for all what you have done for us.

You are the true pride and prestige of all Indian Diasporas here.

Your hard work has translated many visionary plans into reality; else it would have remained only on paper. The fruits of your labour are evident in all structures, right from the pavements to the magnificent skyscrapers. If we are able to stand and speak, today, it is because of your efforts. Even this roof, the walls and the floor are a standing testimony to your sweat.

Thank You!

I am told that the UAE is host to more than two million citizens of Indian origin with over 65 per cent of them in the blue-collared category, and who have significantly contributed a great extent to the GDP here.

Clearly, your involvement in the economic and social fabric of this country has been noteworthy. Your hard work and constructive attitude has won you appreciation both in India and the UAE.

As members of the Indian Diasporas, we know better than others the challenges and opportunities that a resurgent India represents. We all must work in our individual ways to contribute to the objective of building a dynamic UAE and India.

This thoughtful gesture by the Indian Embassy has created new ways to support the construction workers of Indian origin and honor them for their distinguished services, which often went unnoticed and unheard in the past.

Workers have silently contributed to the growth and development of the UAE and India for more than a decade. Your contribution goes a long way towards the socio - economic development of both the countries. This initiative by the Indian Embassy shows that the Government of India gives priority to the welfare of the Indian Diaspora around the world, and is focused on issues confronting Indians and persons of Indian origin living beyond the borders of India.

The story of the overseas Indian Diasporas is truly the story of ordinary people with extraordinary courage. Today, at this juncture, we are honoring the trials and tribulations, which you overcame to give us comforts that we take granted for.

Thank you again for your efforts.

In the end, I once again congratulate all the award winners and the Indian Embassy for recognizing workers who have demonstrated extraordinary skills in their area of work.

I wish all of you and your families, greater success and progress.

You should keep up the good spirit going!
